On Writing

Finally! A New Series from MJ Summers (Oh, and a Fun Giveaway)

Dear Reader,

It’s been a LONG time since I put out a new book, and as one of the very important people in my writing life, you deserve an explanation. I spent the better part of last year reconsidering my writing career and heading in a new direction—serious women’s fiction. I wrote and rewrote a super sad women’s fiction story that may or may not ever be published. It had me sobbing at my desk for almost six weeks straight, which is probably not the best way to maintain one’s mental health.

I believed that I wanted to move away from romance and into something ‘more respectable’ (i.e., I listened to all the people who kept asking me when I was going to write ‘a real book’). But you know what the funny thing is? Every time I plotted a new story, it turned out to be—guess what?—a romance! So, having done some serious soul searching, I’m back where I always wanted to be, writing love stories.

It’s truly where I’m happiest, which means the words flow like wine. Mmm… wine.

Anyway, I’m proud to present you with The Crown Jewels Series, a romantic comedy trilogy featuring Tessa Sharpe and Prince Arthur of the tiny picturesque kingdom of Avonia.

I have to warn you that these are not typical MJ Summers books. They’re light romantic comedies, very heavy on the laughs (like, definitely don’t read chapter four if you have to pee) with a low steam level (but lots of delicious sexual tension and some swearing).

Another major difference is that the entire series features the same fabulously funny, sexy couple, but don’t worry, I promise I won’t drop you off a cliff at the end of the first or second book. And you won’t have to wait long to read the entire series.

The Royal Wedding will be out in the summer, and The Royal Delivery will be out in late fall.

Okay, so having said all that, may I present to you…

~ A Crown Jewels Romance ~

Enough laughs to satisfy fans of Bridget Jones. Enough sparkly shoes and breathtaking ball gowns for fans of Cinderella…

Twenty-eight-year-old Tessa Sharpe, a.k.a. The Royal Watchdog, hates everything about Prince Arthur. As far as she’s concerned, he’s an arrogant, lazy leech on the kingdom of Avonia. When he shocks the nation by giving her the keys to the castle in an attempt to boost his family’s dismal public approval ratings, Tessa has no choice but to accept and move in for two months. It’s lust at first sight, but there’s no way she can give in to her feelings—not if she wants to have a career or a shred of pride left when her time at the palace ends.

Ultra-private, ultra-hot Crown Prince Arthur has always gotten by on his charm. But that won’t be enough now that the Royal Family is about to be ousted from power once and for all. When Prince Arthur has to rely on the one woman in the kingdom who hates him most, he must learn that earning the love of a nation means first risking his heart…

Can two natural enemies find their forever in each other’s arms, or will they ruin each other to save themselves?

As one of my loyal readers, you always get first notice of my books, and you get the best deals. The Royal Treatment will be $2.99 during the pre-order and the release party. Then the price goes up to $3.99 and it’s not coming down for a good long time.

Hello, Lovely Readers!

I’m back with our final installment of “The Real Locations of the Full Hearts Series.” In today’s edition, we’re traveling all the way from San Diego, California, to rural Bebedouro, Brazil for Breaking Hearts!

If you’ve read the book, you’ll know that we meet up with Trey in San Diego, where he’s working as a bartender while he finishes his economics degree. His son, Tomas, has gone back to Brazil with his mother three years earlier, and even though they have regular Skype calls, the two are little more than strangers. Trey is working his tight buns off to finish school as fast as possible, so he can get a good job and provide for his little boy.

Because their story is set in Brazil, I needed to do a TON of research, from interviewing a journalist who lived and worked in Brazil for many years, to speaking with family lawyers regarding child custody laws, to finding a very kind teacher/translator who helped me for hours answering all my questions about life in Brazil. Her name is Cyssah Oliver, and she was such a gem that I named Alessandra’s best friend after her.

As you may recall, Trey ends up taking his chances as a bull rider to earn enough money to get himself and Tomas home to the USA. This turn in the story actually came from my research. I had put Trey in a real pickle—needing to get custody of his son and permission to take him home (which it turns out is tough to do because of Brazilian Law surrounding their under-aged citizens). He also was flat broke and wasn’t able to get a job because he had no work visa. In my research, I found out that the area of rural Brazil where Alessandra (Tomas’s nanny and Trey’s love interest) is from is an area with a big cowboy/bull riding culture. And therein lay his solution. Funny how life works sometimes, isn’t it?

Tomas spent the first three years of his life in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, pictured here. This is the view from Gabriela’s apartment. You can see the mountains in the distance.

And here is the real farmhouse that inspired the Santos Family Home. It is set on an orange grove in real life, just outside of Bebedouro.

Ahh, doesn’t it make you think of a simpler life?

Well, that’s it for my location series! I hope you enjoyed it. It’s been fun for me to go back and revisit my old writing haunts. 😊

I’ll be revealing all the details on my next series VERY soon! And I cannot wait. What I can tell you now is that it’s set in a completely fictional country—a small kingdom called Avonia.

In the meantime, let’s watch this video I made for Breaking Hearts. I still love this song…

Thank you for joining me!

P.S. For anyone interested, the results from the survey I sent out 2 weeks ago are in. CLICK HERE

March 2017 Romance Readers Survey

Hi All!

Spring has sprung and I hope you are well. Two weeks ago, I sent out a survey to help me make sure I’m meeting your reading expectations. I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who filled it in. I know how valuable your time is, and I am so grateful that you would give me some of it. 😊 And if you didn’t, I still love you!

Funny story: I whipped up the survey REALLY fast, set it up, and sent it, then realized that my best friend is in market research and would have most certainly helped me write up much more scientifically sound questions. Doh! Slow down, MJ. Geez.

So, here are the results, flawed as the survey may be…

That’s it! My takeaways are that you want really great stories (huge shocker there), regardless of narrative point of view, page count, or whether there are long, steamy sex scenes or not. It does seem like a lot of people do like present tense story-telling, which is a good thing because that’s how my next series is being written.

For those who will miss my steamy sex scenes, I apologize that they won’t be in my next series, but promise they’ll be back in the fall for a book I’ll be releasing then! (And to my mom, sorry that the sex scenes will be back). 😉

That’s it for now!

Cheers, my friends!

The Real Locations from Breaking Clear

Hi All,

I’m back with my third installment of “The Real Locations of the Full Hearts Series” – Breaking Clear edition.

Today, we’re heading to beautiful, Boulder, Colorado, considered one of the healthiest places in the USA to live. Boulder has a terrific climate for outdoor enthusiasts, with rock climbing, hiking, and cycling being on the top of a lot of local’s to-do lists.

picture-1Remember super hot rock climber/home builder, Evan and his best friend’s little sister, Harper, who comes back to town to look after her father?

Here are all the real places that inspired my telling of their tale…

picture-2Downtown/Pearl Street Mall – Boulder has a quaint, lovely downtown area with an artsy vibe.

If you read the book, you’ll remember the Band on the Bricks Festival, where Harper ends up acting as a photographer for her best friend, Megan, who is down with a nasty stomach bug. That is a real festival held each year downtown, with the beer tents and concerts featured in the story.

picture-3The University of Colorado does in fact, have some beautiful spots for wedding photos (as seen when Harper does a shoot with an engaged couple on the steps of one of the older buildings).

picture-4Our last stop on the tour is the lovely Boulder Golf and Country Club, where Evan and Harper meet up at a wedding, after a long and angst-filled break-up. Remember how he declared his love for her under the stars? Happy sigh…

That’s it for now!

Be good! And if you can’t be good, have fun!

Coming soon—we’re off to Brazil to catch up with Trey and Alessandra from Breaking Hearts
